Integration is a long-term process intended to ensure that all lawful and permanent residents are included in German society. Immigrants should be able to take part in all areas of society, as fully and as equally as possible. Immigrants are obligated to learn German and to be familiar with Germany’s constitution and laws and to respect and abide by them. At the same time, immigrants must have the chance to participate in as many areas of society as possible, on as equal a footing as possible. The federal, state and local governments all share responsibility for this task.
