Construction of sport facilities

Only if German top athletes have institutions and facilities for training and competition meeting the highest standards will they be successful in international competition. For this reason the Federal Ministry of the Interior promotes establishments for high-performance sport, in co-operation with sport organisations, the Länder and municipalities. But mass sport is also promoted by the Ministry: Through the special assistance programme “Golden Plan East” the Federal Government participates in the construction of sport facilities for mass sport in the new federal states. The Federal Government’s sport policy is characterized by the awareness that sport plays a special role in modern society. Reaching out to all groups of society, it serves as an example of how people can assume responsibility and learn how to help themselves and others. Sport is extremely valuable in giving people something meaningful to do in their leisure time. Furthermore sport also serves a social purpose in many respects since it reaches out to everyone in society, also those who, because of their origin or their current situation, risk exclusion from social life. At the same time it is an indispensable element of active health care.
