The Federal Ministry of the Interior of the Federal Republic of Germany

One of my most enjoyable tasks is promoting sport – in summer 2006 the whole world looked at the united Germany for four weeks. The 2006 FIFA World Cup was hosted by our country.
Germany welcomed not only the 31 national teams but also some three million visitors. Our guests got to know and liked Germany as a welcoming, tolerant, modern as well as innovative and “can-do” country.

Besides sport, the Federal Minister of the Interior has a wide variety of responsibilities. The most important of these is guaranteeing the country’s internal security.

Our goal is to prevent crime, whether terrorist attacks or other forms of criminal activity, before it occurs. Every member of the public also needs to be aware and willing to get involved in order to identify possible causes of crime and deal with them as early as possible.

Managing and controlling immigration fairly has a major impact on life in Germany, as well as the integration of permanent residents who are not of German origin. It is important to improve German language competency among new residents and to make sure that we are all aware of the values anchored in our Constitution.

We will continue to devote our efforts to modernizing the state and public administration, reducing bureaucracy and making sure that the benefits of the information society are accessible to all.
